
Dr. Southern is board certified by the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and specializes in complex wound care. Additionally, he serves as the Director of the Wound Care Task Force at Methodist Hospital.
He received a Bachelors from Franklin College of Indiana and then attended medical school at Indiana University. In 1970, Dr. Southern began a Surgical Internship at The National Naval Medical Center in Behtesda, Maryland. He later returned to The Naval Medical Center in Bethesda for a Plastic Surgery Internship. Dr. Southern maintained a United States Naval rank of Commander from 1970 – 1981.
Dr. Southern has lectured and participated in wound care lectures throughout the country and has assisted in writing multiple publications on wound care. He is also a member of many associations including the American Medical Association, American Association of Wound Care Specialists, and the American Burn Association to name a few.
